NAGAUR CATTLE FAIR

Nagaur Fair -The Jodhpur Nagaur Fair is the second biggest fair in India. The fair goes on for eight days. Nagaur Fair of Jodhpur, Rajasthan is held every year during the month of Jan-Feb. It is popularly known as the Cattle fair of Nagaur. This is because the Nagaur Fair is mainly all about trading of animals.

Jaipur, 3 February: The well known Annual Nagaur Cattle Fair will begin tomorrow with a large number of cows, bullocks, oxen, horses and camels accompanied by turbaned sellers and eager buyers. The four-day fair will be held from 4 February to 7 February and has been organized by the Department of Tourism, Department of Animal Husbandry and the District Administration Nagaur. This fair attracts participants from Punjab, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.

Apart from the Cattle Trading – there are interesting rural games and cultural events organized for the rural folk. Cattle competitions, horse and camel races, best breed judging are some attractions for animal lovers. Furthermore, folk dances and folk music programmes are also a special feature of this event.

From shearing sheep to handsome marwari horses to spices all are compiled in one fair. The other attractions are the ‘mirchi’ bazaar (largest red chilly market of India), wooden items, iron-crafts and camel leather accessories.

On Tuesday, 4 February, the event will begin by a Shahnai Recital at 11 am (Rao Amar Singh Rathore Cenotaph) followed by Best Breed Competition for Nagauri breed of Bullocks, Calves and Murra Buffalo (Cattle Ground), also from 11 am. In the evening there will be a Cultural Show (Cattle Ex. Ground) from 7 pm onwards.

On Wednesday, 5 February, the day will begin again with Shahnai Recital at 9 am (Rao Amar Singh Rathore Cenotaph). This will be followed by Best Breed Competition for Horses, Calves and Camels (Cattle Ground) at 11 am. During the day from 11 am to 12 noon there will be Moustache, Turban Tying and Camel Decoration competitions (Cattle Ex. Ground). Evening the visitors can enjoy Rajasthani Folk music and dance (Cattle Ex. Ground).

On Thursday, 6 February, the day will begin with Puppet Show from 9 am onwards (Rao Amar Singh Rathore Cenotaph). Meanwhile at the Cattle Ground the cattle will start disbursing. The Horse Dance and Camel Dance competitions (Cattle Ex. Ground) will be held at 10.30 am and 11.30 am, respectively. This will be followed by Prize Giving and Closing Ceremony (Cattle Ground).

On Friday, 7 February, there will be a puppet show from 9 am onwards (Rao Amar Singh Rathore Cenotaph).

Nagaur is well connected to the major cities by road and rail. The nearest airport is Jodhpur, some 135 kms away. Nagaur with is massive ramparts and impressive gateway is one of the fascinating towns of Rajputs. The town was granted to Raja Amar Singh Rathore by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The historic Nagaur Fort houses splendid palaces, temples and palatial mansion. Nagaur is well known for “Nagauri” breed of Cattle.
